This position has responsibility for the development and administration of population specific education for patients and staff. The Nurse Educator coordinates, facilitates and/or teaches unit/specialty classes and is responsible to maintain unit education records and oversee staff education files. The nurse educator also acts as a catalyst for change and adapts to change in a positive and professional manner. The nurse educator understands and promotes University Health Care Mission, Vision, Values, and Initiatives. They exemplify and role model the Exceptional Patient Experience culture.

This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers nursing orientation for defined areas and provides ongoing support as a mentor for newly hired staff.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of education programs and outcomes.
  • Provides nursing staff with support in their role as patient and family educators.
  • Maintains strong clinical presence on the unit(s) and clinical competence by working side by side with new staff, preceptors, charge nurses and staff and/or bedside care.
  • Takes an active role as the lead preceptor for the unit. Assesses knowledge, skills, and competency and provides support for unit preceptors.
  • Assesses ongoing needs of staff. Based on needs, develops and maintains unit clinical competencies, skills and knowledge in collaboration with unit leadership and Clinical Staff Education.
  • Maintains accurate and timely education records.
  • Maintains and models clinical and professional expertise by being conversant with current literature and practice. Develops productive and collegial relationships with other clinicians, educators, quality and leadership.
  • Participates in Clinical Education Committee including facilitating and communicating education information to defined areas of responsibility. Takes an active role in house wide education programs such as Clinical Orientation, Preceptor Workshop, etc.
  • Serves as Nursing Student Intern (NSI) Coordinator, Nurse Residency Mentor and collaborates with the Student Placement Coordinator for placement of nursing students in areas of responsibility.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in defined areas and department standards.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to speak effectively before groups and/or teach classes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in relevant software applications.
  • Ability to teach and support the instruction of the organization’s electronic medical records and other clinical computer programs.
  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
  • Typical work hours fall between 7 am and 6 pm, however, incumbent may be required to work irregular hours or shifts including nights and weekends to accommodate specific learner or project schedules.

Required

  • Two years of clinical experience.

Licenses Required

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. If not changing state of practice to Utah, current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in a state covered by the Interstate Compact.
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire.

  • Flexibility and desire  to fill a variety of needs in education, instruction, administrative office needs, etc.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in nursing, education, or related field.
  • Trainer certification or equivalency preferred at hire or obtain within one year of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
