This position is responsible for assessing the patient’s nutritional status and developing, implementing, and monitoring the appropriate therapies to counteract the patient’s compromised nutritional status.


  • Assesses the nutritional status of the patient and screens for potential risks in a timely manner. After clarifying the cause of the problem, performs a nutrition diagnosis.
  • Develops and implements an individualized plan for nutrition intervention in accordance with the patient’s nutrition prescription. May develop a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support including enteral and parenteral nutrition.
  • Evaluates plan effectiveness and measures progress towards outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions, and implements changes as needed.
  • Educates patients and their families on nutritional needs and diets, then assesses patient understanding of and compliance with prescribed diet principles.
  • Provides personal or phone contact and follows-up with patients and physicians as needed.
  • Works cooperatively with food service staff to assure conformance to diet prescriptions. Assists in planning patient menus and menu modifications according to the approved diet manual.
  • Educates or otherwise assists in the training of the hospital, medical, nursing and general staff, health care students, and the community by conducting in-service training and educational presentations. Assists in the education of dietetic students and interns by planning learning experiences, teaching, and evaluating performance.
  • Assists in achieving compliance with accrediting organizations and regulatory agency standards, which may include state and federal organizations.
  • Acts as an advocate, resource, and liaison with nursing and the medical staff by providing optimal communication and enhancing patient nutritional care, education and research opportunities.
  • Keeps up-to-date on developments in clinical nutrition in assigned and specialty areas and maintains up-to-date standards of practice in specialty areas.
  • Maintains accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities, including information for scheduling and billing.
  • Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, task forces and projects.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated potential ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above.
  • Ability to provide care to the population served.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development.
  • Ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy skills.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to educate individuals with various levels of education and understanding.



Licenses Required

  • Registered Dietician with the American Dietetic Association.
  • Current License to practice as a Certified Dietitian in the State of Utah.
* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Qualifications (Preferred)


  • Two years of clinical/practical experience.
