    Position Summary 

    Acute Care Clinic Advanced Practice Clinician Job Description

    Huntsman Cancer Hospital

    The Acute Care Service provides supportive outpatient care to Huntsman Cancer Hospital’s medical, surgical, and radiation oncology patients with acute medical needs or uncontrolled chronic conditions.

    The APC will provide care and treatment in the ACC in an independent practice model.

    This position is responsible for providing both primary and specialty medical services.

    This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
    • Performs physical examinations.
    • Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
    • May perform bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, skin biopsies, lumbar punctures; administers intrathecal chemotherapy; and may participate in bone marrow harvests.
    • May monitor the level of and adjust immunosuppressive medications.
    • Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
    • Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.
    • Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.
    • Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
    • Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
    • Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
    • Participates in special projects and committee functions.

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

    1. Must be able to fully evaluate patients, interpret ancillary tests, make diagnoses and treatment plans independently
    2. Must be currently knowledgeable in paracentesis/thoracentesis (or willing to be trained upon hire)
    3. Need to be comfortable with critically ill patients
    4. Needs to be comfortable with end of life care and discussions , palliative care, symptom management

    Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah.
    • At least two years of ICU, ER, or Inpatient experience
    • BLS/ACLS certified
    • Board Certified
    • Must have a current DEA license

    Qualifications (Preferred)

     

     

     

     

     Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Oncology background
    2. Acute Care trained if NP. If not acute care trained, need to be able to demonstrate ICU/ED/Inpatient experience

     

     

     

    Qualities:

    1. Collaborative, team player, understands limits and knows when to ask for assistance

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Demands

    Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

    • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.
