Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a patient-centered and evidence-based approach applied at the system-level to improve patient outcomes by managing and preserving a patient’s own blood. The PBM Program has several foundational principles: anemia management, blood conservation strategies, optimized transfusion practices, optimization of hemostasis and/or coagulopathy, and patient-centered care. The PBM Program Manager has expertise in PBM delivery, evidence-based clinical transfusion practices, and transfusion safety. This individual applies culture change and improvement principles to the processes surrounding PBM. The role collaborates with physicians, nurses, and administrators to improve patient outcomes by optimizing blood product usage and PBM throughout UUH, enhancing safety and reducing costs. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and implements policies, processes, and procedures to support PBM that meet or exceed published standards
  • Leads PBM quality improvement projects.
  • Investigates transfusion-related safety events including those related to accurate patient identification and adverse reactions.
  • Advocates for evidence-based transfusion practices, working with all levels of clinical and medical personnel offering recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborates with bedside caregivers to support management of anemic patients before surgery.
  • Serves as a resource for nurses, clinicians, and laboratory staff for issues related to PBM and transfusion safety. Develops and delivers PBM curriculum.
  • Coordinates system-level transfusion and blood management governance.
  • Provides expert PBM consultation and advice to sponsors, champions, and executives.
  • Integrates PBM data and domain expertise to clinical decision support.
  • Analyzes EHR workflows, recommends improvements, and supports implementation.
  • Collaborates with other departments such as Compliance, Accreditation, and others to ensure smooth transitions.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with caregivers.
  • Executes basic project management including identifying obstacles and escalating when appropriate.
  • Selects and performs quantitative analyses. Some analyses require inferential statistics.
  • Collaborates with sibling departments to execute system level process improvement.
  • Monitors PBM program performance, established metrics, and applicable cost savings. Compiles a report of PBM program performance to share with health system leadership and applicable committees.
  • Gains an understanding of our culture, operational strategy, market, and patient populations.
  • Identifies PBM improvement opportunities.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Technical knowledge of evidence-based clinical transfusion practices and PBM.
  • Data analytics functions including pulling queries and running reports within Epic and the enterprise data warehouse.
  • Ability to effectively educate and train members of healthcare teams.
  • Manage self (self-motivating, self-disciplined): Work in teams with minimal input from management.
  • Project management and quality improvement methodology.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, or equivalency.
  • Four years’ experience applying PBM principles with demonstrated success.
  • Analytical thinking, process thinking, and an instinctive understanding of process variation.
  • Knowledge of accrediting body/regulatory requirements (FDA, AABB, CAP, DNV) and quality management principles.
  • Proficiency with Excel and Epic.
  • Experience as a facilitator of culture change
  • Strong communication & presentation skills
  • Strong sense of ownership and personal accountability.

 

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • A current Utah License to practice nursing.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position requires moving throughout the health system, including healthcare delivery environments, regularly because this is an outward facing role. There will be some sedentary office work. This role may require exerting up to 10 pounds. The role may require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects.
