This position assesses spiritual care needs, and also develops, implements, and updates spiritual care treatment plans in order to meet culturally appropriate emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families according to best-practice standards for professional chaplains. The position also provides spiritual care support to hospital staff.

Responsibilities

  • Completes spiritual needs assessments and formulates interventions strategies based on professional best practice guidelines for addressing spiritual care needs
  • Actively collaborates with all members of the treatment team, furthering team-based understanding of significant spiritual needs and spiritual/emotional factors contributing to the patient's well-being.
  • In coordination with other IDT members, provides patient/family/staff support in times of crisis, death or difficult diagnoses per hospital and professional protocols.
  • Provides spiritually appropriate counseling or guidance in individual and group settings, affirming the dignity, diversity, and autonomy of an individual’s own orientation to spirituality and/or religion.
  • Conducts and/or assists in coordination of individual, communal, and/or public religious rituals including prayer, spiritually-informed mindfulness/centering, baptisms, weddings, seasonal worship services, and at end-of-life.
  • Liaises between patients/families and community-faith leaders to coordinate tradition-specific spiritual care.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated respect for people of all religious/spiritual backgrounds, for the care recipient’s religious/spiritual orientation and the ability to provide spiritual care in accordance with this frame.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and active listening skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and leadership ability .
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and evidence of ability to effectively connect with people of all ages with empathy and compassion.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated progress towards Board Certification eligibility by the Association of Professional Chaplains or other nationally recognized certifying body (NACC, NAJC, CACC).
  • Endorsement and good-standing with an APC-recognized faith-body.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • At least one year experience working in a Trauma Level I or II level hospital.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish.
