This full-time Psychologist in the University of Utah's Pain Management Center provides psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services of a clinical nature through direct patient care and consultation for patients in an outpatient / ambulatory clinic.
Department Overview: The Pain Management Center is an outpatient clinic located south of the University of Utah Campus, in Research Park.

Introduction to the Pain Management Center
Behavioral Medicine services at Pain Management Center are provided by licensed clinical psychologists. Pain Psychologists teach patients strategies to manage or cope with pain. We know pain is complex. Pain can change activity levels, goals, stress levels, relationships, and emotions.
Behavioral Medicine services start with an evaluation followed by recommendations for treatment. This may include individual and group treatment, as well as workshops.
Evidenced-based treatments we offer include:
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP)
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I); in context of chronic pain
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for chronic pain
• Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills training for chronic pain management
• Motivational Interviewing (MI) for health behavior change
Some common goals of Behavioral Medicine treatment include:
• Improve understanding of how the brain and body process pain
• Understand how stress impacts pain and learn strategies to reduce stress in the body
• Understand role of thoughts in the experience of pain
• Learn to identify and evaluate unhelpful thoughts about pain
• Introduce ideas for living with pain without giving up on most important parts of life
• Learn to set meaningful goals for pain management and quality of life
• Learn ways of integrating mindfulness into daily life
• Understand role of mindfulness in experience of chronic pain
