Overview

We are seeking a new Radiology Director to oversee Oncology Imaging Services at University of Utah Health, Hospitals and Clinics.

 

This newly developed position will direct system-wide operations, strategy, and services within the following areas of radiology and imaging:

  • MRI
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Mammography

Qualified applicants must have completed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Radiology, Business Administration, Health Care Administration, a clinical field, a related area, or the equivalency.
  • Six (6) years of progressively more responsible leadership and strategic planning experience in radiology or imaging services within a hospital or health system.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a matrixed environment.
  • Prior staff management experience.

The additional background below will also be preferred for this role:

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, or a related area.
  • ARRT registration in a related modality.
  • Practice management experience in a health care setting.
  • Experience overseeing cancer imaging services or working in a cancer center setting is highly desirable.

 

This position reports directly to the Associate Executive Director of Radiology Services and holds a dotted line to the Executive Director of Huntsman Cancer Hospital.

 

The Director of Radiology Services - Oncology Imaging serves as a key member of the health system’s leadership team, supporting the radiology department physician chair and other key system leaders. They will regularly communicate with, prepare materials for, receive directions from, and provide counsel to leadership within Huntsman Cancer Hospital and other clinical service areas within the health system.

 

The incumbent is responsible for addressing a robust and growing demand for all imaging services in the market, with an emphasis in oncology imaging. They will provide oversight to the supervision of staff, technology review, support of clinical research operations, general process improvement, budget development and management, and the implementation of clinical initiatives within the department and institution.

 

In addition, this position will support departmental facilities planning and management, participating in the building design of all future cancer facility projects.

 

To be successful in this role, the incumbent will closely collaborate with stakeholders within the department and across the institution, drawing on a broad understanding of organizational operations, policies and procedures, and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment. The position does not have any responsibility to provide direct patient care.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads in developing strategies and implements plans to improve and standardize all aspects of clinical operations within the radiology and oncology imaging environment.
  • Works with department and organizational leadership to establish and achieve long range goals, ensuring the implementation of strategic business plans that are aligned with the vision, strategic plans, and goals of the organization.
  • Ensures healthy and collaborative relationships among the faculty and staff within the department, and with other related departments and leaders.
  • Develops effective, clear, and precise methods of communicating with executive leadership, within Huntsman Cancer Hospital, and with other departmental leaders, clinical faculty, and staff on a regular basis.
  • Continuously assesses and improves efficiency of clinical systems and processes within each area, in collaboration with the departmental leadership.
  • Partners with key stakeholders across the organization to create operational standards specific to Radiology and Oncology Imaging services.
  • Develops and launches new strategic initiatives, particularly in the areas of clinical strategy and operations.
  • Leads, participates in, or oversees special projects, as assigned by leadership.
  • Works in close partnership with the Radiology Director of the University Hospital to address and resolved problems for imaging operations across the health system.

Operations Management

  • Partners closely with the radiology and oncology imaging providers in planning and executing clinical operational improvement initiatives or new programs.
  • Works closely with IT to build out systems that create efficiencies in operations and improve access to patient care.
  • Provides management oversight of inpatient and outpatient radiology operations for Huntsman Cancer Hospital and all other clinical service areas as applicable.
  • Oversees radiology-specific projects and collaborates with the health system project management teams to spearhead complex, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional initiatives to achieve strategic, operational, and financial objectives of the department and the hospital.
  • Directs the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives aimed at improving patient care and/or outcomes.
  • Leads the review of any new technology or treatment technique and subsequent implementation, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, a safe implementation, and proper training and education.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the changing health care environment and assesses the market’s need for clinical services. Monitors and evaluates the adequacy of existing clinical services, ensuring the development of programs and services to respond to the market, as directed. Develops, supports, and manages programmatic initiatives for care improvement and cost reduction.
  • Participates in designated committees and special projects within Huntsman Cancer Hospital and other clinical service areas as applicable, representing system imaging support in various internal and external forums.
  • Leads regular meetings with Department of Radiology operations managers.
  • Provides leadership in the implementation of regular staff meetings, in-service trainings, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and/or required.

Clinical Research Operations

  • Supports and maintains a clinical research structure that is adaptable and flexible to interact seamlessly with the clinical department.
  • Works with internal and external research leaders in facilitating ongoing research projects and clinical trials in the department.
  • Acts as a liaison between clinical research and the clinical patient care team.
  • Continuously assesses and improves the efficiency of imaging systems and processes.
  • Regularly participates in meetings with clinical research staff.
  • Works closely with Finance and Research Administration to ensure resources needed to support research efforts.

Facilities and Space Management

  • Participates in the design of future imaging space needs.
  • Oversees the installation of all major imaging equipment for all modalities reporting into this role.
  • Manages all service contracts for all major equipment for Huntsman Cancer Hospital and all other clinical service areas.
  • Maintains good working relationships with Facilities Management and similar departments, ensuring that work is accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Plays key leadership role in large capital projects including minute taking, and workplan development. Oversees space renovations, moves, and relocations throughout the department.
  • Proactively identifies facilities-related issues that require action. Participates in and responds to various executive rounds.
  • Communicates changes and updates in space and environment of care to department managers and staff, ensuring that work is conducted in a way that limits disruption to routine patient care operations.
  • Manages emergencies, working to maintain operations and remediate as quickly as possible.

Financial Management

  • Works closely with Finance for fiscal management for all areas of responsibility.
  • In partnership with leadership, prepares analysis and forecasting for introduction of new programs/services.
  • Partners with finance team within Radiology and leadership from other service areas to prepare annual budget.
  • Presents and justifies budget requests to the appropriate leadership in order to ensure proper justification and/or data analysis is included as supporting documentation.
  • Leads capital budget requests and operating initiatives.
  • Examines, analyzes, and interprets financial reports to explain any budget variances.

Human Resource Management

  • Takes responsibility for the recruitment and retention of all staff within the area of responsibility.
  • Creates a working environment that supports the ongoing professional growth and development of all staff, ensuring high morale and optimal job satisfaction.
  • Serves as the primary resource for all administrative issues concerning human resource policy issues for staff in the areas of responsibility.
  • Facilitates resolution of conflicts and issues that emerge between key clinical and administrative stakeholder groups.
  • Addresses conflict and issues between managers, supervisors, and employees within and across divisions of the department. Consults Human Resources, as appropriate, to resolve disputes.
  • Monitors compliance with policies and procedures mandated by institutional regulatory entities (e.g., DNV, Department of Public Health, CMS, etc.)
  • Partners with Human Resources to ensure employment relationships, compensation, and benefits are implemented in a manner consistent with health system policies and procedures.
  • Ensures appropriate training of employees.

  • Direct experience with patient relations, problem solving and conflict management.
  • Experience in managing operations and designing strategy for oncology imaging services.
  • Skills in management, including strategy development, prioritization, action planning, execution, and development of monitoring tools.
