The Intermediate Electrophysiology Technologist provides clinical care to electrophysiology patients in the procedural lab. This position serves as the second-level technologist position that performs the essential functions of the position with minimal prompting and with the ability to troubleshoot simple issues. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, equipment connectology, conduction measurements, stimulator, pacing maneuvers, table/stand control modules/console for the monitor, circulator and the scrub role for electrophysiology procedures in the lab and the hybrid OR. Staff are responsible for seeking assistance with responsibilities outside of their current knowledge level and are active participants with area leadership to create a plan for advancing practice. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Tests, monitors, and maintains safe equipment handling for proper and safe operation.
  • Properly uses EMR system for patient care and procedural documentation
  • Prepares patients and equipment for electrophysiology procedures by preparing the site of entry, draping patient, arranging sterilized instruments and catheters, and calibrating and setting-up monitoring/mapping equipment, pressure transducers, and tubing.
  • Obtains and records hemodynamic, electrical, and angiographic data by operating hemodynamic and electrical amplifiers and digital and line fluoroscopic equipment.
  • Performs intermediate-level circulating functions during procedures.
  • Develops and contributes to a plan of nursing for the patient's care.
  • Assists in the collection of arterial and venous blood samples and respiratory gases.
  • Monitors patient's vital signs.
  • Participates in life-saving measures such as defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Properly decrements supplies from inventory and restocks supplies when time allows.
  • Performs sheath removal and manual pressure as needed for hemostasis.
  • Performs scrub role for surgical implantation of pacemakers, interval cardiac defibrillators and cardiac ablation procedures.
  • Assists with the department's required quality programs.
  • Participates in a rotational call schedule for procedures after scheduled hours, limited weekend hours and holiday coverage.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above at the intermediate technologist skill level.
  • Ability to identify cables for all equipment connections.
  • Ability to properly measure conduction interval when requested.
  • Demonstrated proper use of EP Med Stimulator and Computer as directed by physician.
  • Ability to properly describe EP study pacing maneuver concepts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of table and examination control maneuvers on the appropriate angiosystem.
  • Ability to provide care to the population served.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
  • Knowledge of electronic monitoring devices.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills in alignment with the Promise standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to function calmly and competently in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to deal with hazards involved in assessing and providing care to patients.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • One (1) year of previous clinical radiology technologist experience.
One of the following:
  • Current Associate Electrophysiology Technologist within the department that has received sign off on all orientation and associate-level monitor, circulator, and scrub checklists by unit leadership.
  • Intermediate Electrophysiology Technologist candidate external to the department and/or organization with the ability to receive sign off on all orientation and associate-level checklists within six (6) months of hire into the department.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of Utah.
* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Two (2) years of interventional experience in radiology, vascular or cardiac specialties.
  • ACLS card.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
