  • This position is responsible to perform any plumbing-related work under the direction of a journeyman-level plumber, including installations, alterations, inspection, maintenance, operation and repair in and around the organization's facilities.
  • This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Required

  • Acceptance into and continued compliance with an approved apprentice education program. This will include classroom participation and on the job training, as required by the program.
  • A score of at least 70% on the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (WTMA), taken after an interview.
  • Current, valid State of Utah driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Services, repairs and maintains all types of control valves by removing, disassembling, inspecting and replacing worn/broken parts, if necessary, and reassembling and reinstalling.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on restrooms, water softeners, RO-DI pure water systems, swimming pools, pump stations, annual surveys (cathode-gas leak) and related piping systems.
  • Identifies and resolves plumbing problems by repairing or replacing pipes, fittings, valves, plugged drains, faucets, toilet repairs, etc.
  • Determines proper materials for the particular assignment at hand so that equipment and materials are matched properly for the application.
  • Remodels old plumbing systems preparing a bill of materials needed, and then constructing the new systems according to plan by using appropriate equipment.
  • Installs rough in and finish work for new construction by installing medical gas, compressed air, vacuum, natural gas, and water distribution and drain systems and later hooking up individual components such as sinks, drains, taps, and related equipment.
  • Installs, repairs and tests RP back flow preventers and vacuum breakers on equipment and double checks valves on all potable water connections as required by the IPC code and Utah rules and regulations.
  • Performs assigned preventive maintenance checks on valves, pumps, water heaters, dilution tanks, and other operating equipment.
  • Maintains and periodically updates equipment data history using computer software and applications.
  • May install, maintain and repair medical gas systems such as oxygen, breathing air, patient vacuum, waste anesthetic vacuum, etc.
  • May install, maintain and repair boiler, or steam distribution systems used for humidification and sterilization.
  • May be required to be on a weekly on-call rotation schedule 24-7 to perform emergency repairs at odd hours and during weekends, as needed.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions for the service of clinical, electrical items.
  • Applies skills in performing processes such as the inspecting, maintaining, and installing.
  • Ability to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in order to respond to emergencies that involve the campus distribution system.

Licenses Required

  • Current license to practice as an Apprentice Plumber in the State of Utah.
