This position provides assistive foreign language interpretation, written translation and assists in education for non-English speaking customers, students or participants of the organization while completing interpretive training hours as part of the Interpreting training program. Challenges include accurately interpreting and communicating information in an unbiased, clear and concise manner with patients, families, healthcare staff and physicians. This position also assists with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker. All experience in this role is under the direct supervision of the Interpreter Services Department. Interpreter Apprentice employees are in a supervised learning role during training and will not replace a certified interpreter until they have completed certification and PRN hours, at which point they will be expected to work independently.”Once the incumbent passes the certification exam and is in good standing with the organization (i.e., no disciplinary actions involving HR in the past 12 months), they will be required to complete a total of 80 PRN hours over the course of a 90-day period. PRN hours must be completed in addition to the incumbent’s regularly scheduled hours in their primary position.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Interpreter Services Department, provide interpretation between healthcare staff and the non-English speaking population.

  • Perform sight translations of written educational materials and documents in accordance with readability guidelines.
  • Assist non-English speaking patients in completing medical, financial, and related forms.
  • Escort non-English speaking patients to appropriate service areas.
  • Provide patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with nursing and rehabilitation staff.
  • Serve as a conduit for communication between non-English speaking patients and medical providers during follow-up interactions.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and perform sight translations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining composure and sensitivity in a healthcare environment.

  • Must be fluent on English and Spanish
  • Must be in good standing with the organization (no disciplinary actions in the past 12 months).
  • Must be able to complete 51 total hours of training.
  • Must be a current employee of the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Must be able to complete 80 PRN hours in addition to regularly scheduled hours in current position within 90 days of obtaining certification.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Knowledge of medical terminology (may be required depending on the department of hire).
  • Certification as a medical interpreter (or willingness to obtain certification before PRN work begins).
  • Must pass a medical proficiency test (English-Spanish) if not already certified.
