This position is a three-month internship. Applicants should expect to work a regular schedule Monday through Friday for the duration of the three months. The internship is designed to give a student exposure to essential data science function within a healthcare organization: prepares, verifies and analyzes health care data extracted from the electronic health record or financial systems for purposes of quality improvement, clinical operations, or business optimization. Partners with the University of Utah Health Innovation group analysts and data scientists on advanced analytics approaches and AI innovation opportunities.

Responsibilities

 

Hands-on experience:

Participants will work on real-world projects involving data analysis and interpretation and practical skill development in areas like data wrangling, statistical analysis, AI, and

data visualization.

 

Rotational Learning Exposure:

Rotations may cover various aspects of healthcare analytics, including clinical data analysis, population health management, enterprise KPI design, practice optimization,cost analysis, and quality improvement. Participant will be exposed to advanced analytics, AI, verification and validation methods, and their practical application in healthcare analytics and practice performance measurement.

 

Skill Development:

Rotations focus on developing both technical skills (e.g., SQL, Python, AI, and data visualization tools) and business acumen, allowing participants to understand how data analysis can inform healthcare decisions. At the conclusion of the rotation, the participant will have an opportunity to prepare and present an executive level briefing from a participant project of interest.

 

Best Practices:

Rotations will provide exposure to best practice data request workflows and analytics product development life cycle for the Innovation Office. Essential Functions

  1. Analyzes health data extracted from various sources and other business systems
  2. into computerized information systems.
  3. Researches and evaluates data for accuracy and completeness to ensure integrity for
  4. purposes of decision-making across a variety of clinical practice subject areas.
  5. Participates in defining the analysis approach and data design process to ensure
  6. value is delivered to customer.
  7. May be required to run SQL queries and reports and extract data from publicly available sources. experience with Python a plus.

Qualifications

Required

  • Two years data entry experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; proficiency in the use of health care data for secondary use analysis and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.
