This position supervises employees and/or processes by coordinating and overseeing work assignments. The incumbent ensures relevant policies and procedures are implemented. This individual participates in the interview process as well as assesses, develops and provides training for new and existing employees. This position has the authority to determine appropriate training needs and initiate disciplinary action.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates the work of an area in the department in mission, vision, and values.
  • Drives the operation in alignment of goals and strategy of the department.
  • Schedules labor and equipment.
  • Maintains responsibility for the training and education of staff, including annual compliance and licensing/certification.
  • Accounts for the accurate reporting of time and attendance of direct reports.
  • Maintains department records and prepares monthly reports.
  • Monitors, orders and maintains stock of department supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in hospital committees and meetings as assigned.
  • May assist clinical staff in patient procedures in accordance with the incumbent’s licensure, as required by the specific department.
  • May manage the hiring, orienting and development of staff.
  • May conduct employee evaluations, coaching, and initiate the disciplinary processes to align employee performance and behaviors.
  • At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

  • Demonstrated organizational, human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve staff and scheduling conflicts in order to meet department goals and needs.
  • Ability to orchestrate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • Demonstrated availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 patient care environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Three years of related experience that is consistent with the certification or license held.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following
    • Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.
    • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA
    • Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.
    • Current ABO certification through the American Board of Opticianry..
    • Current certification as a NRCMA - Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.
    • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT
    • JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).
    • JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT).
    • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.
    • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.
* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Previous supervisory expereince.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
