This position performs carpentry work at the journeyman level by applying trade skills to make or repair products made of wood or other related building materials. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Performs skilled carpentry by following instructions, rough sketches or detailed drawings in the construction, repair, maintenance and alteration of doors, door closures, stairways, partitions, and related fixtures.
  • Builds rough wooden structures such as barricades, boxes, concrete forms, scaffolds, fences and wooden frameworks for use in various parts of buildings.
  • Repairs and maintains various parts of buildings such as fixing screens, floors, windows, ceilings, roofs, hydraulic door closures, etc.
  • Accomplishes a variety of finishing work by trimming, fitting and installing windows, doors, sheet rock, moldings, baseboards, paneling, etc. and performing other finish work as required.
  • Lays laminated plastic counters and floor tile.
  • Finishes surfaces and joints with sandpaper, scrappers and sanders.
  • Attaches hinges, catches, and locks.
  • Installs ceiling tiles and carpet.
  • Operates woodworking machines and hand tools to cut and shape parts for stock or to finish and assemble items already prepared.
  • Works with masons by pouring, finishing and repairing construction essential to cement work.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Completes required after-hours on-call rotation.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate with little supervision and lead the work of others, as necessary.
  • Demonstrated independent judgment in selecting materials, tools, and procedures in finishing assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risks which require the use of special safety precautions and equipment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry, or the equivalent four (4) years of professional carpentry experience.
  • Depending upon department of hire, a valid, State of Utah Driver's License may be required.

  • This position involves very physical work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving heavy equipment and/or supplies. The position may involve above-average agility and dexterity with the ability to hold, grasp and manipulate small parts, and use hand and power tools. The position involves the ability to handle physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.
