The Hematology Inpatient Unit at Huntsman Cancer Institute is a 24-bed inpatient unit that primarily cares for patients with hematologic malignancies i.e. leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etc. We see patients at various stages of their cancer journey, including new diagnosis, treatment/maintenance, complications/symptom management, curative, or end of life. This patient population is complex and tends to have high acuity. Therefore, RNs have a 3:1 patient ratio, and are supported by HCAs with a 5:1 patient ratio. Our unit is fast-paced and provides lots of opportunities for critical thinking, learning and growth. Our RNs are skilled in IV chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration, central line care, and clinical trials. Our patients typically have several cycles of chemotherapy, so we see them back with us often. This uniquely allows our team to have the opportunity to build connections with our patients and their loved ones, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. We work closely with many interdisciplinary teams to ensure our patients are receiving well-rounded care from all viewpoints. Our service lines are highly involved with the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) at HCI, and our staff have the chance to see research go from “bench to the bedside,” including Phase 1 trials. What a great opportunity to be involved with cutting—edge science that is changing cancer care today! We have a supportive and inclusive team with a culture of community, where teamwork is highly valued. We share a common goal of providing compassionate care to oncology patients and positively impacting their experience. Our unit is located the beautiful new Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers at Huntsman Cancer Institute. This expansion has allowed our team to further specialize in Hematology and we offer in-service education from our wonderful APC team teaching about hematology specific issues.
